What Child Is This?

What Child is This

What child is this, who, laid to rest
On Mary's lap, is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

Why lies he in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear for sinners here,
The silent Word is pleasing.

So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh,
Come peasant king to own Him,
The King of kings, salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

Raise, raise the song on high,
The Virgin sings her lullaby:
Joy, joy, for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

  1. When I sing this in my head it is the most haunting and lovely melody of Christmas, almost as good as "Silent Night," and "O Holy Night," for me at least. Thanks Angela!

  2. Love and best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

  4. Hello my sweet Angela: Saw you out walking...good girl. Been at the Nursing home so haven't walked for a few days. I love this song. I am posting a song for Christmas Eve with my watercolor of Mother and Child.
Love you so much, will see you after Christmas! Love and Hugs!

  5. Thanks that is one of my very favorite Christmas carols!

    Love Ya

  6. Beautiful! I wish you a Merry Christmas, Sister!!

  7. You know, I was just thinking today how it would be very helpful to just read some of the lyrics to the classic Christmas songs. Because you tend to lose the meaning due to the familiarity. This post is awesome!

  8. Merry Christmas!
This is one of my favorite songs.

  9. Dear Angela,

Hope your Christmas was wonderful and that the new year will be filled with light, love and much sweet laughter,

Love to you and yours my friend,
